How research into Marijuana is leading to medical breakthroughs

Marijuana has come a long way since its hippy smoking image beloved by the mainstream media over the last few decades.Awareness of its medical properties have slowly emerged over that time to challenge the preconceptions and help to form a new image for the plant.

Yes we have to be aware of the dangers of the misuse of Marijuana but also need to keep a clear head when considering the immense benefits in can bring to many people.

There are at least two known active chemicals in marijuana that have been well researched and have been shown to have medical benefits. These are cannabidol (CBD) which can treat brain functions and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which has some valuable pain relieving and other properties. CBD is also said to improve bonehealing.

Marijuana can be used to help Glaucoma

Marijuana can be an effective treatment for Glaucoma and can prevent the eye disease damaging the optic nerve which can lead to loss of vision. It basically has been proved to decrease the pressure inside the eye which can help to alleviate the symptoms.

It can help control epileptic seizures

Epilepsy is a debilitating condition for sufferers and so any possible benefits that can gained from marijuana need to be taken seriously. Cannabinoids can help to control the severity of seizures and act to alleviate other symptoms in a huge number of sufferers. Research is ongoing but early signs are good and it is being carefully watched by charities and the medical profession.

It relieves the pain for arthritis sufferers.

There has been a body of research into this area and many people have been self-medicating with marijuana and have seen the results for themselves. The active ingredient cannabinoids have been shown to improve sleep quality for sufferers and also alleviate pain when given to a group of patients when compared to a similar group why were given a placebo.

Active ingredients found in marijuana may stop cancer from spreading

It still need further research but early research shows that CBD could help prevent cancer from spreading. This of course could prove to be life-altering for many. It can do this by turning off a gene called Id-1 which helps spreads cancer through the body. Studies on breast cancer cells were shown to become less aggressive spreaders when treated with cannabinoids.

It can help people suffering with Anxiety

It has been shown that marijuana can help relive symptoms of anxiety which can be a debilitating condition for many people. It can improve the mood and help act as a mild sedative which has a beneficial effect for patients. Of course it has to be pointed out that too much can also help induce anxiety. Further research is needed and patients need to be aware of the pitfalls.

Marijuana could help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease

There has been some research that has shown that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) could act to slow down the development of Alzheimer’s. The study took place in 2006 and showed that THC could help to slow down the formation of amyloid plaques. It is these plaques that go on to kill brain cells and cause Alzheimer’s. Again it is early days but it shows just how seriously marijuana is being taken by many sections of the medical research industry and why research into marijuana will lead to breakthroughs in many areas over the coming years.
